Catalytic hydrothermal high-pressure gasification (supercritical) of aqueous biomass and waste

for the methanation (synthetic natural gas (SNG)) of the biomass components and recovery of nutrients such as phosphorus and other elements

Aqueous biomass and waste can be used to provide energy and disposed of. The patented catalytic hydrothermal high-pressure gasification method of the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) contributes to global environmental protection in the field of renewable energies. In this method, aqueous organic residues are converted into biogas/methane using catalytic high-pressure digestion, and reusable residues, such as phosphorus, are returned to the circular economy. One benefit is that the feed does not have to have the water removed from it to begin with, thus avoiding a costly and time-consuming process. In addition, organic components that cannot be fermented are completely gasified.

This method ensures that around 60% of aqueous biomass and waste is disposed of within a few minutes and separated into biogas/methane, nutrients and water. Nutrients such as phosphorus and other elements can be reused as fertiliser, for instance. Furthermore, the water occurring at the end of the process is clean.

Approximately 0.25 kg of methane CH4, ready for feeding into energy systems, can be obtained from one kilogram of organic dry matter.

Using our know-how in adapting this high-tech process for industrial use, we serve the international market. With KASAG Swiss AG you remain a step ahead.

Trials – Would you like to try out this innovative method on your feed (aqueous biomass and aqueous waste)? You can use the Konti-C (1 kg/h) or Hydropilot (up to a maximum of 110 kg/h) test plants at the Paul Scherrer Institute.
